What is Nylon Sheet?

Nylon Sheet and Nylon Rod have become the most well known engineering plastics due to their excellent properties. Nylon acts as an all rounder product and is capable in many situations of being a safe and dependable plastic.

Nylon sheet, plates, tubes or rods within the polyamides, are commonly referred to as "nylon", each with distinguishable differences between the types. The most important ones are: Nylon PA 6, PA 66, PA 11 and PA 12. The differences in physical properties which exist between these types of nylons are mainly determined by the composition and the structure of their molecular chains.

Nylon 6 is perhaps the most popular used nylon grade used throughout Europe due to its properties, and Nylon sheet is particularly easy to machine, be it through automated machines or manual machinery.

How is Nylon made?

Nylon, like other plastics, typically starts with the distillation of hydrocarbon fuels into lighter groups called “fractions,” some of which are combined with other catalysts to produce plastics (usually via polymerization or polycondensation). Nylon can also be produced from biomass. Based on the nature of biomass, it can potentially result in a more biodegradable material. The actual process for Nylon production falls into one of two methodologies. The first involves the reaction of monomers with amine (NH2) groups reacting with carboxylic acid (COOH). The second consists of the reaction of diamine (a molecule with 2 x NH2 groups) with dicarboxylic acid (a molecule with 2 x COOH groups).

What is the difference between cast and extruded Nylon?

The main difference lies in the manufacturing process. Cast polyamide products are manufactured by means of a chemical reaction process. This allows products with extremely large dimensions and custom cast parts to be manufactured. Water absorption and dimensional changes are lower in CAST. The crystallinity is greater so that wear resistance and machinability are better. Extruded absorbs more moisture and is thus tougher and has greater impact and vibration damping properties.
